When Joseph Smith Jr was killed on June 27th, 1844
in Carthage Illinois, Emma was expecting their ninth
child. David Hyrum Smith was born Nov. 17, 1844.
This is the place where David would go to paint.
It is noted on the highway heading towards Keokuk but
it does not get many visitors. Kinda hard to get off the
road in this spot.
It is a very beautiful and serene place. All you can hear
here are the birds singing and the Mississippi River making
a very gentle sound as it passes by.
The creek cuts through one small area of this clearing and
it only adds to the beauty and quietness.
David died at age 59 - a troubled man having had to
deal with the trauma of his father's death.
The father he never knew.
So much history there-never knew about this place or really even him-so sad.
